As part of the federal relief laws passed by Congress in 2020 and 2021, financial support is available to districts and schools through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Funds. These funds offer schools and districts the flexibility to address their critical areas of need as they support their students, educators, and communities around various accelerated learning efforts. One area in which your leadership team can use these funds is to address unfinished learning through evidence-based professional learning frameworks, such as Reading Apprenticeship. • Essentials II Online (Jun 27–29) will sharpen your content-area teaching and give you new ways to help your students become more aware of, and articulate about, their own strengths and challenges as they read and make sense of complex text.
• Note that all online Essentials courses are highly interactive and combine synchronous and asynchronous work. Participants experience the kinds of text-based, collaborative teaching and learning they will enact with their students.

Asynchronous courses designed with college educators in mind:

• Reading Apprenticeship 101 (Jan 17–Mar 6, Mar 14–May 1, Jun 13–Jul 31, or Sep 12–Oct 30) is designed to provide an introduction to the Reading Apprenticeship framework with practical classroom assignments to “make it real.” Guidance and feedback will be provided to you by colleagues in the course and by a facilitator with extensive Reading Apprenticeship and coaching expertise.
• Reading Apprenticeship in College Writing (Jan 17–Mar 13 or Jun 13–Aug 7) will deepen your understanding of the Reading Apprenticeship framework, particularly the role of metacognitive conversation in the successful implementation of redesigned college writing courses.

The Reading Apprenticeship Team has tapped its deep expertise in online professional development to design new learning opportunities to meet educators’ rapidly changing schedules and classroom environments.

Check out our newest offerings which feature synchronous summer intensive experiences followed by professional learning communities during the school year. You will learn how to establish a positive learning culture in the classroom (live or virtual), as well as new ways to get students reading, writing, and analyzing complex texts together (digital and paper). Our expert facilitators will guide collaborative learning and provide substantive feedback along the way. We hope these offerings will be helpful as we collectively face COVID-19, and beyond.

Leadership Community of Practice for College Instructors

A version of this traditionally in-person/online hybrid offering was redesigned to be available fully online. LCoP is open to higher-ed (university, college, and community or technical college) instructors of any level or subject area whose practice of Reading Apprenticeship is ongoing. Learn more!

With limited funds available for professional learning (PL), especially at the middle and high school level, Reading Apprenticeship staff are often asked how districts fund their programs. Some districts use Title I and II funds, and many double their efforts by also securing local, state, and federal grants. One of the largest sources of federal support for initiatives that include literacy-focused PL is the Striving Readers program.

In 2017, the U.S. Department of Education Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy (SRCL) program awarded more than $364 million dollars to State Education Agencies (SEAs) for multi-year comprehensive education programs that will advance literacy skills for students from birth through grade 12. States complete rigorous planning and application processes, and, if awarded, seek resources and expertise to enact their Striving Reader multi-year plans.

The Strategic Literacy Initiative (SLI) is currently working with SRCL states and districts such as the Maryland State Department of Education and Baltimore County to support their literacy and learning goals. “Efforts like Maryland’s have the best potential to result in positive changes for teachers and students because they are multi-year and systemic,” says SLI Partnership Development Director Sharon Sáez. “Maryland is giving teachers the opportunity to engage in inquiry-based professional learning, with time to practice what they learn, reflect, collaborate and improve with ongoing support from expert facilitators and coaches.”
