Reading Matters in Secondary Grades and Every Subject Area
Testimonials
While many new approaches to reading are focused on early readers, it remains critically important for all educators to support and engage their students in reading at the secondary level. Reading Apprenticeship professional learning has been proven – in multiple independent research studies — to support teachers in improving student’s reading achievement and
subject–area learning, and we know that seeing the work in practice and hearing from teachers helps everyone understand how to do this work.
Please watch and listen as a current superintendent, teacher, and principal explain why reading matters at the district, school and classroom levels. In short interview segments they describe a) the need for a systemic approach to support literacy at the secondary level; b) the success a teacher feels when her high school students approach her to talk about what they reading and why; and, 3) the need for professional learning that makes teachers feel supported, satisfied, and joyful about their profession.
The Reading Apprenticeship team thanks the teachers, leaders, and students of Crestwood High School in Dearborn MI and University Prep in Detroit, MI for making their teaching and learning visible so we all can reflect and improve as well as you have!
