SLI Grant to Improve Middle School Writing

Over the next three years, the Strategic Literacy Initiative will develop and roll out an innovative 60-hour professional development program—Reading Apprenticeship: Writing Connections—to help middle school teachers improve the academic writing of their students.

The program features a blend of online and in-person professional development and has the potential to become a cost-effective teacher development resource for middle schools nationwide. Initially, Reading Appprenticeship: Writing Connections will reach 3,000 teachers in four states: California, Indiana, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.

SLI won the $5.9 million grant in a competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education’s Supporting Effective Educator Development (SEED) program. The professional development will be based on SLI’s Reading Apprenticeship framework and its research-validated in-person professional development for improving subject area literacy at the high school level.
