Who Should Participate

  • Middle school and high school teachers of all subject areas and levels
  • Active teaching required: Participants should be teachers. Coaches or other educators with consistent access to classrooms are welcome, but must have ability to regularly practice Reading Apprenticeship strategies and routines with students.

Cost

  • $450/person for Course 1 or Course 2
  • $800/person when you register & pay for Courses 1 & 2 together
  • For teams of 4+ paying together, the following discounts apply: $425/person for single course or $750/person for Courses 1 & 2
  • 3 CEUs will be available for a total cost of $210.00 from California State University-Monterey Bay, College of Extended Education. The 3 CEUs will be available for purchase directly from CSUMB-EE once a student completes Courses 1 & 2 (CEUs are not available to students who complete Course 1 only). Purchasing CEUs is completely optional, and not required for registration in the course. For more details, click here.
  • Refund Policy: We do not offer refunds for this course, however if you are unable to complete the course for any reason, you may re-enroll in the next session for a one-time re-enrollment fee of $50. If you are unable to complete the course on your second attempt, any subsequent enrollment would revert to the full cost of registration

Course Overviews

Course 1: Introduction to Reading Apprenticeship: Building a Foundation for Engaged Learning

This 15-hour course is designed to provide an introduction to the Reading Apprenticeship framework, focusing on building student motivation and collaboration while working with content area texts. Course activities include professional reading, viewing classroom video, posting to online discussions, and trying out Reading Apprenticeship routines in your classroom. You must be an active teacher or a coach/administrator with access to a classroom where you can try out what we are learning in the course. The approximate amount of time you will need to devote to the reading, viewing, and posting in the course is two and a half hours each week. Guidance and feedback is offered by peers in the course and the facilitator who has extensive Reading Apprenticeship experience.

Course 2: Introduction to Reading Apprenticeship: Metacognitive Conversation and Extensive Reading

Prerequisite: Course 1: Building a Foundation for Engaged Learning

Course 2 is also 15 hours. Participants will further develop their implementation of the Reading Apprenticeship framework through a focus on the metacognitive conversation – helping students to be aware of, and articulate, their thinking and problem solving processes. You will also learn new ways to help students develop reading stamina through extensive reading and gain new formative assessment tools which will sharpen your responsive teaching skills.

As in the first course, activities include professional reading, viewing classroom video, posting to online discussions, and trying out Reading Apprenticeship routines in your classroom. You must be an active teacher or have access to a classroom where you can practice what you are learning.

Technical Requirements

  • Operating Systems: Windows 7 (and newer), Mac OSX 10.6 (and newer), Linux – Chrome OS
  • Computer Speed and Processor: Use a computer not more than 5 years old when possible, 1GB of RAM, 2GHz processor
