Metacognitive Chalk Talk in Math

An observation by a colleague in a Reading Apprenticeship classroom inspired new math teacher Stephanie Butman to try Chalk Talk, a silent, collaborative, metacognitive activity often used in English, science, or history classes. “It is quite remarkable,” she wrote in her description of the activity for the NCTM journal Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, “to see a classroom full of middle schoolers fully engaged through written mathematical arguments and conversations.”
