Blended Learning Insights

Reading Apprenticeship has won two SEED grants that support our work at scale with thousands of teachers in several states. Our SEED projects, known as Reading Apprenticeship Across the Disciplines and Reading Apprenticeship: Writing Connections, are currently featured in the May 2018 Insights Brief sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education Supporting Effective Educator Development (SEED) Program. These briefs share best practices and lessons learned from SEED grantees and this issue focuses on blended learning.

One of the ways Reading Apprenticeship has supported teacher learning at scale, while maintaining quality and multiple opportunities for teacher collaboration and learning throughout the year, is via a model of professional learning that combines in-person learning and small online Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). These PLCs provide a lot of benefits, including scheduling flexibility and the ability to collaborate across distances without travel, but they also require smart design and facilitator skill to function well. Read the brief to learn how to make the most of PLCs by establishing a strong social dimension, smart grouping, and preparing facilitators with online learning and practice.
