Literacy in Science:

A Natural Fit

Ninth grade science teachers Janet Creech and Ann Akey designed a yearlong Reading Apprenticeship-inspired science course that engages students in metacognitive conversation about the range of science texts they read, in keeping metacognitive logs about their reading, and in carrying out quarterly nontextbook reading-based projects. In this article they share their curriculum and experiences, demonstrating why literacy in science is a natural fit.
