Apprenticing Adolescents to Reading in Subject-Area Classrooms

In this early publication about Reading Apprenticeship, SLI authors describe the Reading Apprenticeship framework in the context of “cognitive apprenticeships,” a metaphor to describe a type of teaching designed to assist students in acquiring more proficient cognitive processes for such valued tasks as reading comprehension, composing, and mathematical problem solving.

The article also showcases particular aspects the Reading Apprenticeship framework in vignettes and examples from the classrooms of high school teachers taking part in Reading Apprenticeship professional development.

From the Text

“My students found my strategies like using the pictures, slowing down, breaking it into chunks, using my knowledge of Spanish, thinking about what the root of a word might mean, wondering about meanings in new contexts, flat-out guessing, etc. to be a complete revelation.”
